As I walked into the building (the Childrens Memorial at Yad Vashem) the tape relayed a girls name, adding: Nine years old, from Berlin. I stood rooted to the spot. All I could hear was my own voice echoing back down the long, long years:

My name is Susi. I am nine years old. I am from Berlin.

I lifted my eyes to the sky of the dome and gazed on the myriad of twinkling lights that made up the memorial.

I had been spared. But some became stars.
